Director George Miller and his co-writer Nick Lathouris dedicated over 15 years to crafting the script for “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), meticulously developing detailed backstories for each character, with a special focus on the protagonist, Imperator Furiosa. During the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, George Miller utilized Skype to conduct casting auditions for the lead role of Furiosa. He ultimately selected Anya Taylor-Joy after being impressed by her performance in an early cut of the film Last Night in Soho and her audition with the “Mad as Hell” monologue from Sidney Lumet’s Network. Taylor-Joy received guidance from Nicholas Hoult, who previously played Nux in Fury Road. Later in the process, Tom Burke joined the cast in the autumn of 2021, stepping in for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II due to scheduling conflicts.

Several key crew members from Fury Road agreed to return for the film, including Margaret Sixel as film editor, Colin Gibson as production designer, Junkie XL as composer, Ben Osmo as sound mixer, Jenny Beavan as costume designer, and Lesley Vanderwalt as makeup designer.

In January 2022, it was announced that Simon Duggan would serve as the cinematographer. In June 2022, it was reported that Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson would reprise their roles from Fury Road. Additionally, in August, Quaden Bayles, who gained attention after a video documenting his mistreatment at school went viral, was revealed to have a small role in Furiosa, following his work on Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022).

Following numerous speculated start dates for filming, Deadline Hollywood confirmed in a May 2022 interview with Miller that second-unit filming had commenced in Australia as a prelude to principal photography. Furthermore, the production secured an AU$175 million filming incentive and allocated a record-breaking US$233 million (AU$343.2 million) budget for filming in Australia.

Hemsworth revealed that Miller had enlisted former convicts as supporting cast members. Second unit filming transitioned to Hay in May 2022, with further shoots planned for Silverton. Principal photography officially kicked off on June 1, 2022, in Australia, with plans to conclude by September. The filming concluded in October 2022.
